What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is a form of complementary therapy. It uses hypnosis, a natural state of mind that we often experience throughout the day. For example, when we are daydreaming, watching television or reading a book. It is a pleasant, safe practice and feels like deep relaxation.
What’s the Initial Consultation?
The Initial Consultation is up to 60 minutes. During this time we will talk about your requirements and goals. I will then discuss with you your tailor made programme, including suitable hypnotherapy techniques. The client agreement is completed.
What will happen in a Hypnotherapy Session?
Your first hypnotherapy session will usually be a couple of days following your initial consultation. We will begin with a chat to make sure you are comfortable, you’ll be able to put your feet up and relax into a comfortable chair or lie on a couch, with a cosy blanket (or without, whatever suits you best). I will begin the hypnosis with some verbal relaxation, relaxing the mind and body from head to toe. All you need to do is close your eyes and listen as you become deeply relaxed. Then the work begins! I will use the techniques I have discussed with you to help you reach your goals before giving you plenty of time to transition back to wakefulness. At the end of your session we can discuss how you are feeling and look at the progress you have made so far.
Can I easily come out of Hypnosis?
Yes. If at any time you wish to come out of Hypnosis, simply open your eyes.
How many Sessions will I need?
This depends on what the issue is and underlying circumstances. It will be something that we decide together since some situations are very straightforward and only need one session where others can take much longer. As a guide, six sessions is fairly typical but my approach is to see how you feel about the number of Sessions you need from the beginning. I am very flexible though and am happy to offer more sessions, or stop early if you’ve met your goals in fewer sessions than we originally planned.
Can you be forced to be Hypnotised?
You can only be hypnotised if you want it, under your own control and cannot be forced to do anything that you do not feel comfortable with.
What does Hypnotherapy feel like?
Hypnotherapy is a pleasant feeling of deep relaxation and you are in control at all times. People can experience feelings of calmness, strengthening, focus, grounding and peace. Some people visualise beautiful lights or feel distanced from their bodies in a very safe and comfortable way.
How do you put me into Hypnosis?
No swinging pendulum or staring deep into a stranger’s eyes! I will guide you into hypnosis using verbal relaxation, where I ask you to close your eyes and imagine things like walking down a flight of stairs. As you get more and more relaxed you will automatically enter the deep relaxation of hypnosis.
How do you help me to change?
Therapy takes the form of a special “script,” a script that I will tailor make for you after the initial consultation and adapt as needed between sessions.
Do I need to do anything?
During the session, you will be guided in to deep relaxation. You will be given practical tasks to do in between sessions, such as effective breathing techniques and self-hypnosis.
Will I feel differently following the Hypnotherapy Session?
The feedback from my clients is very positive. People often say they have thoroughly enjoyed the Session and feel relaxed and refreshed.
Why should I choose Hypnotherapy to help me?
The benefits of receiving Hypnotherapy are amazing. It is a natural, safe practice and can help you in many ways. Often people find that they have struggled for many years with behaviour patterns that stem from childhood, or from a more recent traumatic event, and hypnosis is able to get to the root cause where other methods might only help more superficially.
Will the Hypnotherapy Sessions be linked with my medical records?
Seeking help from a Qualified Hypnotherapist in private practice, is an alternative way of getting help. Sometimes people do not want an issue logged on their medical records. There are however some medical issues where GP approval should be sought. This would only be sought with your approval. In my experience, the GPs I have sought permission from are very supportive of Hypnotherapy and have clearly seen an improvement with their patients.
Who do you discuss my issues with?
I take confidentiality very seriously. I have a Supervisor and we are in regular contact. As we are Accredited with the National Hypnotherapy Society and the National Counselling Society we are bound by the Code of Ethics regarding confidentiality.
Is Hypnotherapy safe for Children?
Hypnotherapy for children and young people is considered highly effective and is completely safe. Children tend to respond very well to hypnosis as they are naturally quite imaginative and use their subconscious minds a great deal more than adults do. Hypnotherapy can typically help children with issues such as: Exam nerves, sleep problems, bed wetting, fears, eating disorders and low self-esteem. I am DBS checked for working with children.
